Tarbuck's Luck

📺 Series 1 seasons GB
1970

'Sunday Night At The London Palladium' made gap-toothed Liverpuddlian comic Jimmy Tarbuck a household name. With his Beatle-styled hair and cheeky image, he seemed a natural successor to Arthur Askey and Ken Dodd. In 1970, the B.B.C. poached him from A.T.V. to make three variety shows, of which 'Tarbuck's Luck' was the first. I vividly remember the opening credits - the screen was split into segments, in each a sharp-suited Jimmy was seen getting into a flash sports car with some stunning dolly-bird, while Jimmy sang the Sinatra-styled theme, replete with outrageously sexist lyrics including: "I am lucky, lucky Jim/the people all know me as lucky Jim/I have got a girl for Monday,Tuesday/every single day of the week.". Standard B.B.C. Saturday night fare, with sketches, stand-up, and the occasional guest-star. One sketch 'The Awful Lawyer' featured Jimmy as a barrister who pretends to be Counsel For The Defense in order to extract a damning confession from a criminal. Fun for Tarbuck fans.
